The First Step Towards Embodiment

Writer: Johanna Kulp, MSW, LCSWJohanna Kulp, MSW, LCSW

“Going deeper into your body means that you let go of the outside culture’s expectations of what it should be.”

Throughout the book I outline key ways that we, as women, have been led to believe that we should constantly be changing, limiting, controlling, and monitoring our bodies. We traverse the history of diet culture, of body image, of our own memories and beliefs which have been built before us. We discuss what this impact has been and how many of us have been led down roads of self-deprivation in hopes of creating change.

It didn’t work. And no new diet or injection or anything in-between will shift those memories until we work to heal them and subsequently heal our relationship with our bodies.

Healing in the book begins with changing our thoughts, then throwing compassion and care over all our memories and former beliefs about our bodies. We walk through step by step ways to exercise (pun intended) extra compassion, and strong belief systems with ourselves.

The quote listed above outlines one of the final steps—embodiment. Embodiment is the act of being in our bodies, not standing outside of it judging ourselves.

When we are embodied, we are going deeper inside of our bodies. Allowing ourselves to hear and listen to its needs and desires. And this involves letting go of society’s expectations and allowing our bodies to guide our way.

It’s not an easy process, but finding that guidance in our bodies fuels so much in terms of healing and confidence.
