This is a reminder that the kids are listening and weighing (pun intended) their own food intake and bodies against our statements.

So as summer approaches, no need to share about your latest diet or weight loss goals. The kids internalize this.

We want to raise kids that are connected to their bodies, excited about enjoying all types of food, and learning how to be intuitive eaters that build themselves up.

And our work here, as parents, is to shift this. To change the way we relate to food and how we teach our children through that lens.

It’s not our fault that we learned these things, it is our responsibility to change them.

Teach them to be in their bodies, enjoying food in all varieties.

And teach them that sometimes at any given meal, we may eat beyond full and that’s ok!

It’s all good data for us to take in to inform more intuition going forward.

Fat isn’t a negative descriptor. When my kids talk about fat bodies or ask questions like above (which was a real conversation we had yesterday!) I will never say— “don’t say fat!” That instills that fat is a shameful thing. Instead I talk about how fat bodies, larger bodies, are just like any other body difference. Tall, short, slender, larger, brown skin, black skin, peach skin. Bodies are diverse!

Why do I talk about it in this way? Because I don’t want there to be any shame around any body sizes for my kids, whether that’s now or in the future. Because there is absolutely nothing shameful about different body sizes- we only feel this way because of the depictions in our cultural messaging. This is true now more than ever with all the GLP-1’s and advertisements.

Kids see negative representation of larger bodies in so many places— movies, commercials, Youtube videos. It’s important to answer these questions directly, and not to shy away from using the word fat.

Last thing- I always make sure that my kids know that even though I’m always here to talk through questions around bodies, it’s never ok to comment on people’s bodies around them. That holds true for someone’s height, or size or shape or anything in-between.

✨Societal & Cultural Messaging— Diet culture, high fixation on ideal body types, and the medias impact on belief systems is severe. Specifically here, marginalized groups (women, members of the LGBTQ+ community, BIPOC individuals and more) are directly impacted due to negative messaging from the patriarchal systems.

✨Mental Health & Mental Health Needs— Experiencing trauma and internalizing high levels of anxiety and depression can shift our feelings about our body. Shame, negativity and feelings of low self-worth can greatly impact our belief systems about our bodies.

✨Family Structures & Genetics — Growing up in a family structure which fixates on “good” bodies as well as sizes and weights directly harms our ability to feel confident in our bodies. We also know that there is a hereditary component to eating disorder development, those that have a relative w/ diagnosable eating disorder being 11-12x’s more likely to also develop one.

But here’s the good news! If we know this, then we know what interventions we can use for ourselves and our kids!

✨We can highly monitor what is taken in from social media, magazines, books and tv shows.

✨We can intentionally resist the patriarchal belief systems about bodies that inundate culture

✨We can be proactive about getting help for our own and our children’s mental health needs.

✨We can stop using diets, or terms like “good food/ bad food” or discussing what is a good body vs a bad body. We can teach ourselves and our children that all bodies are good bodies.

Knowing what develops our belief systems about our bodies, helps us put the building blocks together to create a strong belief system about our bodies for ourselves and our children!

In body image work, oftentimes we get caught in this idea that developing a positive body image is all about LOVING your body . And I mean, kuddos to you if that’s where you’re at 👏 👏 👏

But we need to know that it’s ok to feel not so great about our bodies. I mean, gosh, we’re in a society that has told us from the get go that our bodies are not worthy of love unless they meet these crazy unrealistic standards (hello heroin chic era!)

So I’m here to say you don’t have to love your body in order to work on connection. You can have parts that you struggle with, areas that you are not so enamored with and still find places to feel respectful of your body.

If you’re finding yourself in this place, start with this— what would it look like if I respected my body now? How would I treat it? How would I engage with it?

These simple questions can head you into a direction of hearing your body, of connecting with your body.

So no, you don’t have to love all parts of your body all the time to find places of respect. Don’t get caught in the positivity trap.

Taking away shame with weight , taking away morality assigned to weight happens when we respond neutrally to small (and big) comments are kids make.

There is no moral value to weight.
